Fresh and well struck
Lot 341
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Aurum Barbarorum. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Gold, 22 mm, 6.27 g, 1 h), 'Probus Group B'. Imitating Probus, 276-282. IIIIIIIIIIIII[...]ƎEIIII Cuirassed bust of Probus to left, wearing crested helmet and holding spear over his right shoulder and shield on his left. Rev. [...]EΘIIIIↃ - IƧↃI Victory driving slow quadriga to left, holding wreath in her right hand. Aurum Barbarorum III, 2401. A beautiful piece, fresh and well struck. Pierced and with some minor doubling and a graffito on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

The portrayal of the angular face with the dotted eye and prominent cheekbone of the emperor strongly resembles the 'Stern Group,' particularly Aurum Barbarorum II, 1861. If the piece indeed comes from the same group, the reign of Probus would also serve as a terminus post quem for the Hadrian imitation.
